@mail in Plesk 9.3

I recently upgraded a server to Plesk 9.3 only to find that it broken @mail. The list of available webmail clients no longer has @mail in it and trying to remove the psa-atmail RPM failed with a script error.

In the end, I had to force the removal of the RPM with the --noscripts option and then go and manually delete /var/www/atmail as well as any entries in /etc/psa-webmail/atmail, /etc/psa-webmail/atmailcom, /etc/psa/webmail/atmail and /etc/psa/webmail/atmailcom before I could get the RPM to re-install correctly.

Per-domain/per-account settings for Plesk 9's greylisting

Plesk 9 introduced the very useful feature of greylisting for the Postfix SMTP server (and presumably the QMail one as well, but I only use Postfix as QMail gives me a headache!).

Greylisting basically sends a "resource temporarily unavailable, please try again later" message whenever someone connects and tries to deliver an e-mail. For legitimate SMTP servers, this isn't a problem; they will do as the server and the SMTP RFC says and try again later.

RouterOS v4.x and BGP

Just a quick heads up for those using upgrading from RouterOS 3.x to 4.x and using BGP to announce a default route to any of your peers; you need to set "default-originate" to "always" or "if-installed" for each peer you have configured in RouterOS if want to announce the default route to. This setting is off by default in v4.x so can cause havoc when you upgrade! :(

Binding Zimbra to an IP

Zimbra is a fantastic collaboration suite, but it suffers from one major flaw; it really likes to take over your entire server!
If you want to run Zimbra and your web site on the same server without moving Zimbra's web UI to another port then you'll have to convince it to bind to one IP address you can use the other one(s) as you please.
This is possible and actually quite easy but completely undocumented.

Windows Server 2008 and Adaptec 1430SA

Drivers for Adaptec's 1430SA controller aren't included with Windows Server 2008 for some reason best known to Microsoft. Although you can download the drivers from the Adaptec site, this doesn't really help you if you are trying to install Windows onto the RAID controller itself...

After a bit of fiddling, I managed to get the drivers onto an ISO that I could feed to the virtual media on a KVM and connect to the server using my Windows XP in parallels on my Macbook Pro.

iPhone tethering

Despite Apple and the assorted carrier's best attempts to stop people from using the iPhone as a 2G/3G modem by pulling the NetShare App from their online store, it is still possible (and fairly widely documented, if you know where to look). All you need is a Jailbroken iPhone with the BIND (named) DNS server and 3proxy SOCKS proxy server installed.

It lives!

The brand new, all singing, all dancing Don't Dump That web site is online!
It's been a lot of hard work but it's worth it for a good cause (and to get rid of the horrible old set-up...)
Kieran and I have only just finished the last bit of work on it (merging the hundreds of separate user databases into one) and I must have been back about 10-15 mins when the SQL server decided to take a nose dive!

On the warpath

Hey, guess what? In typical Edward style, it has been ages since I updated this thing and I still haven't got the site working fully or using a custom skin. I have an excuse... I am busy/lazy (take your pick!) ;-)

I got back from going to see "The Dark Night" a couple of hours ago. It's a bloody good film but 'm annoyed that I saw the plot twist coming right from the start - being a bit of a batman fan, I recognised the character as soon as a bloke called Harvey showed up with what correctly I guessed a double headed coin that he uses to "make his own luck" ;-)

Hello and welcome

Welcome to the brand new Spheron1.co.uk, my sparkly new web site pretending not to be a blog. As even Naomi has her own proper website/blog now I decided that it was about time I pulled my finger out and got one. It just felt like I was letting the side down without one and since I own this domain it seemed like the perfect opportunity do something with it.
